Review of TREACHERY ON TENTH STREET by Kate Belli

Treachery on Tenth Street (Gilded Gotham Mystery #3) by Kate Belli will be published on October 11th 2022 by Crooked Lane Press.

It's the summer of 1888, and most members of New York City's elite society have fled the sweltering city for the cooler climes of Newport. To fulfill her role as society columnist for the newspaper, Genevieve Stewart is supposed to be in Newport reporting on balls, tea parties, and other outings. Instead, Genevieve and her investigative partner, Daniel McCaffrey, are compelled to stay in the city. When the Maple family's fortune dried up, Genevieve's friend, Callie, was reduced to working as a model for the many artists who work in New York. When a fellow model is found murdered in her apartment, Callie enlists Genevieve and Daniel to help find the killer. As more models wind up dead with their nude bodies posed to mimic famous paintings, there is fear that Jack the Ripper has made his way to New York and is continuing his murder spree among the art world.

I'm a big fan of the Gilded Gotham series, and I'm pleased to see Genevieve and Daniel working together (along with some reoccurring friends and family members) to solve another mystery that takes them from the mansions of the elite all the way to the slums of the city. Belli brings New York City to life by including a lot of information about the city and the art world of the late 1880s. Like a real investigation, there are times when Genevieve's and Daniel's case moves slowly at times and at a breakneck speed at others. The main plotline of the investigation flows well with the secondary storylines involving Genevieve's personal relationship with Daniel as well as Callie's budding romance with Genevieve's brother. The final confrontation with the guilty party is a little over the top, but TREACHERY ON TENTH STREET is an overall enjoyable, thrilling reading that kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to see what Genevieve, Daniel, and the rest of the main characters get up to next.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
